PRESIDENT'S REPORT

2020 Report From the Chapter President

On behalf of the STS, Regina Chapter Executive, I want to extend best wishes as we mark the mid-point of our second month of 2020. Our very successful Christmas social was held on December 2 with a full house enjoying our annual end of year activity. It is hard to believe that the weeks have gone by so quickly and that the daylight hours are getting noticeably longer.

50th Anniversary Planning
Planning is now underway to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the STS, Chapter which dates back to 1971. Regina and Saskatoon chapters actually predate the founding of the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan which was founded in 1973.

A planning committee has been at work laying out a schedule for consulting the membership on ideas and activities. While the formal date of formation was December 9, 1971, planning is not restricted to that date as we are considering a possible range of activities all year long.

Beginning with this announcement and running through to April 15, you are invited to submit your thoughts and ideas about how to celebrate in 2021. The Anniversary Planning Committee will be gathering all your input, and by late April/early May will meet to produce a report to the Chapter Executive for the May 27th Executive meeting. We will use the August 2020 newsletter along with the Chapter website to report what has been planned.

Since you are receiving this set of announcements by email, please forward any ideas to the Chapter President at: socrates@sasktel.net. For members who receive their information by regular mail only, we will have this information in the March-April edition of STS Outreach and a significant number of members will be contacted by our phone tree volunteers in the coming days.

Membership Information
Our Chapter continues to grow. As of early February we have 2,069 members, most of whom live in Regina and area. The annual newsletter in August will have a feature on where our members reside. Interestingly, we have many who live out of province, some out of country and even a few outside North America. Over half of the membership receives information by email which makes it easier to get information to you throughout the year. Last year we mailed out 1,003 annual newsletters through Canada post and that number continues to drop as email becomes the preferred option for members.

Provincial AGM
The STS AGM will take place in Saskatoon from May 12-14. Our delegate count is yet to be confirmed but will likely be 32 or 33 people. While we have a bit of time yet to submit our delegate list in order to have AGM information sent out in time to each person, if you are interested in being a delegate please let me or any member of the Chapter Executive know as soon as possible. Since we have four of our local members on the Provincial Executive, our total presence at the AGM is actually higher as Provincial Executive members are not included in the delegate count.

One of the many things the AGM does is to consider resolutions which guide the organization in its operations and in working with others like the STS, government, service providers, and others like SSM and ACER-CART. The latter two are organizations the STS is part of and we work with them to advance issues and ideas at the provincial and national level.

As the deadline for submitting resolutions is March 1, if there is something you want the AGM to consider, please submit your proposed resolution by February 20 so that we can discuss it at our upcoming Assembly on February 24. You can submit it to the same email noted above.

STS Bowling April 23-24, 2020
The Chapter is hosting provincial bowling from April 23-24. Registration information is in the latest edition of Outreach and can also be accessed on the STS provincial website. One does not have to be a master bowler to take part as the focus is on fun and relationships with colleagues from across the province.

Ward 4 Community Meeting: Age-Friendly City Discussion
Lori Bresciani, Ward 4 City Councillor, has organized a meeting on April 21 to discuss the topic: “Seniors—Are we an age-friendly city? What improvements are needed?” I have been in touch with her to see if she is comfortable with the Chapter publicizing this event and she has indicated that she welcomes whatever publicity can be generated around this topic.

While the meeting is being organized for Ward 4, the topic is one that affects residents no matter where they live in Regina. If you are interested in attending, the meeting will be held at 7 PM on April 21 at Living Hope Alliance Church located at 3800 Green Falls Drive.
One additional Ward 4 meeting will take place on May 12 at the same time and location. The topic is about speed calming and road safety. As a topic of concern in the city’s southeast, traffic safety is also something that is of common interest no matter where we live.

Upcoming Assembly
We have our next Assembly on February 24. While we are required to conduct some ‘business’ at these events, emphasis is on the entertainment and social aspects of our gatherings. The Assembly starts at 1:30 and business is limited to one hour maximum. At the end of the presentation (about bees) we will have flavourful desserts made possible in part by the production of honey. The presenter, Julie-Anne Howe, will also have items for sale at the conclusion of her presentation. Our two door prizes are also made possible by a healthy bee population. The location is the Ron Mitchell Room at the Regina Public Board of Education Office located at 1600-4th Avenue. There is limited parking in front but a larger parking lot at the rear.

With interest in healthy urban and rural landscapes, the health of the bee industry, and what we as individuals can do to keep this relationship strong, “To Bees or Not to Bees” should make for an interesting presentation on the 24th.
